Jersey City, N.J. – September 7, 2025 – As Saint Peter’s University joins institutions nationwide in celebrating Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week, the University is proud to announce its selection by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) for the second cohort of the Visioning, Organizing, Leading and Advancing the Research Enterprise (VOLARÉ) Institute.

Saint Peter’s is one of only 25 institutions of higher education chosen to participate in the yearlong program, which begins this fall. The VOLARÉ Institute is designed to broaden participation in STEM, cultivate a new research workforce and strengthen institutional capacity by providing faculty and staff with tools and training to enhance competitiveness for external research funding.

“Being selected for the VOLARÉ Institute during HSI Week is especially meaningful for Saint Peter’s,” said Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s University. “As New Jersey’s only Jesuit Catholic University and a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution, we are deeply committed to advancing opportunities for our students and faculty. This initiative will not only expand research capacity, but will also reinforce our mission to serve as an anchor of educational excellence and equity in our community.”

The VOLARÉ Institute equips faculty and staff with the tools and training to secure research funding and expand their institution’s research programs. Through a yearlong series of collaborative learning and capacity-building activities, participants will strengthen institutional infrastructure, broaden pathways into STEM and contribute to a more robust and inclusive national research system.

The VOLARÉ Institute project is led by Oralia De los Reyes, Ph.D., assistant vice president of programs and services at HACU, and is made possible by a grant funded by the National Science Foundation’s Growing Research Access for Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity initiative.

This category highlights schools that provide students from all backgrounds with the highest value education at the most affordable cost.

Saint Peter’s University has consistently earned national recognition for providing an education that changes lives and strengthens communities. On Monday, May 19, Saint Peter’s University held its 2025 commencement exercises, a day filled with inspiring personal stories rooted in humble beginnings. For the graduates, the day was a culmination of hard work and resilience. For University President Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D., it was his first commencement as the University’s leader.

Shared Stories of Resilience and Roots Inspire the Class of 2025

Commencement speaker Marta Costanzo Youth ’87 (left) with Saint Peter’s President Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D. (right)

What resonated deeply with the Saint Peter’s community was the strong connection shared between a number of the speakers at the ceremony and at the events leading up to this special day. The graduates heard from a range of voices, some seasoned leaders, others just beginning their journeys, but many with a shared origin story that began not in distant capitals, but in the Greenville section of Jersey City.

Among them was Marta Costanzo Youth ’87, a global diplomat and this year’s commencement speaker, who returned to her alma mater to deliver a deeply personal address. Youth, who was also awarded a degree of doctor of humane letters honoris causa, described her journey from a grocer’s daughter in Greenville to becoming a high-ranking U.S. Foreign Service Officer with more than three decades of global service.

“In 1987, I sat where you sit now,” Youth began. “At that time, just like each one of you, I could not have predicted where life would take me. What I did know is that Saint Peter’s gave me gifts, Jesuit values, faculty encouragement and the belief that I could make a difference in the world.”

Youth’s reflections were equal parts nostalgic and instructive. She shared that while she had dreamed of attending the Georgetown School of Foreign Service, she chose Saint Peter’s instead because it offered a full academic scholarship and allowed her to stay close to home. What once felt like a setback, she said, became a springboard.

“Saint Peter’s turned out to be the very best thing for me. The individual interest my professors took in me was extraordinary. This University shaped my worldview, grounded me in service and propelled me into a life of public diplomacy,” she said.

Bill Price ’91 (left) with fellow members of the Board of Trustees and University President Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D. (center)

Youth offered graduates four pieces of advice: Be tenacious, stay true to your values, trust your instincts and define your own happiness. Her message, woven with stories from international assignments and humanitarian missions, was rooted in the understanding that even those who start in modest circumstances, like the streets of Greenville, can shape global policy.

This theme was also struck in the week leading up to commencement by Bill Price ’91, a member of the Saint Peter’s University Board of Trustees, who addressed the Class of 2025 at the John J. Delaney ’50 Graduate Reception, an annual celebration that welcomes graduates into the Saint Peter’s alumni community.

During the event, Price reflected on his upbringing in the Greenville section of Jersey City, where he was raised by hard working parents who hoped for a better future for their children. He spoke about how the connections he made at Saint Peter’s shaped him both personally and professionally.

“I share my Saint Peter’s story not because it’s unique—but because it’s familiar,” he told the graduates. “Many of us have stories like it. And now, you’re about to begin writing your own.”

His advice was simple but heartfelt: “Come back for games and reunions. Mentor a student. Support a scholarship. However you choose, stay involved. Help the next generation of Peacocks write their own Saint Peter’s stories.”

Undergraduate commencement speaker Isabelle Bautista ’25

This thread continued throughout the commencement ceremony in the words of Isabelle Bautista ’25, the undergraduate commencement speaker. A first-generation college student and proud daughter of immigrants, Bautista also grew up just blocks from campus in Greenville.

“I remember as a freshman watching commencement and thinking, ‘I want to be her,’” Bautista said, reflecting on a speaker she once admired. “Today, that dream has come full circle.”

Her speech honored not just her own achievements, but the community that helped shape her: her family, friends, professors and the staff members who believed in her even when she struggled to believe in herself. She described her experience as a student in the sciences, a leader in student government and a tutor in the STEM Center, where every failed experiment and every long night turned into lessons in resilience.

Bautista’s journey, like those of Youth and Price, illustrates a central theme of this year’s commencement: Saint Peter’s is a place where humble beginnings are honored and bold futures take shape. Together, they offered the Class of 2025 a compelling message: your origin does not define your limits, but serves as a foundation on who you become.

A Commencement Marked by Milestones and Meaningful Moment

Graduate commencement speaker Jenny Theroux ’25

The graduates also had the opportunity to hear words of inspiration from Jenny Theroux ’25, graduate of the industrial/organizational psychology program and this year’s graduate commencement speaker. Theroux, who returned to the classroom after more than two decades in the workforce, delivered a heartfelt speech about transformation and leadership rooted in service.

“This moment isn’t just about degrees and accomplishments; it’s about transformation,” she told her fellow graduates. “Reinvention doesn’t always happen in a single moment. Sometimes, it’s a quiet shift… That’s what makes this journey so meaningful: not just the changes we choose, but the courage it takes to choose them.”

The event also recognized Dakota Pitts ’25, valedictorian of the Class of 2025. Pitts, a native of Abingdon, Maryland, embodies the Jesuit ideals of academic excellence, leadership and service. A double major in biochemistry and mathematics, standout Division I athlete and dedicated campus volunteer, she has made a lasting impact at Saint Peter’s through her achievements in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

President Benitez closed the ceremony by celebrating the graduates, recognizing the support of their families and inspiring them with the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola: “Go forth and set the world on fire.”

As part of Saint Peter’s University’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, students Marco Guzman and Hajar Touzani are applying their classroom knowledge to real-world settings through highly competitive internships that are shaping their professional paths in public service.

Guzman is currently interning in the Jersey City office of U.S. Senator Andy Kim, where he is supporting constituent services and contributing to policy development that aims to improve the lives of New Jersey residents. Touzani is serving as an intern for State Senator Angela McKnight, assisting with legislative initiatives and engaging directly with the local community on a range of policy issues.

These prestigious opportunities are possible through the MPA program’s collaboration with the James P. Fox Memorial Fund, which was established in 2017 to honor the legacy of Jamie Fox (1954–2017), a devoted public servant who made a lifelong impact on New Jersey through his leadership, policy reforms and mentorship of future generations.

“Jamie Fox, a passionate and admirable individual, made it his mission to bring change to the world around him,” said Touzani. “He valued the significance of public service and policies that would make New Jersey a better place for all. From implementing a restriction on ocean dumping to banning assault weapons in New Jersey, Jamie Fox worked diligently for the common good.”

Senator Angela McKnight (left) with Hajar Touzani (right).

Touzani added that the internship is opening her eyes to how government operates behind the scenes and deepening her understanding of how public issues are addressed. “I would like to learn more about the reality behind working in politics,” she said. “I hope to expand my horizons in government and explore how issues are resolved, especially in the areas of social services, public health, environmental protection, and urban planning.”

Guzman also spoke to the influence of Jamie Fox’s legacy on his current work. “Jamie Fox had a distinguished career in New Jersey politics and public service, having served as NJDOT Commissioner under Governor Chris Christie from 2010 to 2014,” he said. “He was known for his leadership in overseeing the state’s transportation initiatives, particularly efforts to improve infrastructure and address challenges related to roadways and public transit.”

A political science minor, Guzman has long been drawn to public service. “I have developed a passion for public affairs and government,” he said. “I’m really interested in dealing with constituents and the issues they face on a daily basis. My career goal is to work in public policy right out of college, which I hope will eventually lead to a position at the United Nations.”

The James P. Fox Memorial Fund was created to support students like Guzman and Touzani in gaining meaningful, hands-on experiences that prepare them for careers in public service. In doing so, it continues Jamie Fox’s mission of cultivating the next generation of changemakers committed to making government more effective, compassionate and accessible.

Saint Peter’s MPA program remains a catalyst for professional growth, civic engagement and leadership offering students not only a strong academic foundation, but also real-world opportunities to lead, serve and advocate for the public good, which is a hallmark of a Saint Peter’s education.

Rev. James Miracky, S.J., Ph.D., vice president for mission integration at Saint Peter’s University, shared this message with the community about the election of Pope Leo XIV on May 9, 2025:

Along with the many Catholic educational institutions around the world, Saint Peter’s University welcomes with great joy and hope the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV, to leadership of the Catholic Church. While making history as the first pope born in the United States, Pope Leo is truly a global citizen, having served as a missionary in Peru for over twenty years and was granted citizenship there in 2015. As a pastor and bishop among the people of Peru, he established a great love for those most in need and became a strong advocate for human rights and justice for all.

A graduate of Villanova University and member of the Augustinian religious order, as well as a professor of canon law in the seminary, Pope Leo has a strong appreciation for Catholic religious life and the kind of faith-based education that is central to our mission at Saint Peter’s. Pope Leo brings other strong administrative experience to his new role, having served as Prior General of the Augustinian Order for twelve years and, most recently, as prefect for the Dicastery of Bishops, a Vatican position which oversees the selection of new bishops and formation of new dioceses.

In his choice of the name Leo, our new Pope traces his identity to the most recent Pope of that name, Leo XIII, who is considered the Father of modern Catholic social teaching, from which we at Saint Peter’s draw inspiration for much of our work. His 1891 encyclical “Rerum Novarum” (“Of new things”) lays out Catholic teaching on still timely issues such as: the rights of workers, the dangers of unrestricted capitalism and communism, the purpose of government to serve the common good, and God’s special charity towards the lowly and oppressed.

In his opening remarks to the crowds in St. Peter’s Square yesterday, Pope Leo began with a greeting of peace “among all people…in every nation and throughout the world,” and he invoked God, who “loves us all,” to “help us to build bridges through dialogue and encounter, joining together as one people, always at peace.” I cannot think of a better way to articulate what our mission and community at Saint Peter’s are all about.

Joining with the global community of believers and supporters of the Catholic Church, we proclaim, “Viva il Papa Leo!” May he, like his predecessor Pope Francis, inspire us in our Jesuit, Catholic mission to the service of faith and the promotion of reconciliation and justice.

Hubert Benitez, D.D.S. Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s University, issued this statement on the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025:

Today is a day marked by deep sorrow. Pope Francis leaves an indelible mark on the world and on society. He was a humble leader of the Catholic Church and a voice for compassion and justice. As many of us grieve today, I would like to remember the first Jesuit Pope with hope and gratitude; con esperanza y gratitud.

His life was a testament to the mission and values Saint Peter’s University embodies. In his book “Let Us Dream”, Pope Francis shared with us that “this is a moment to dream big, to rethink our priorities – what we value, what we want, what we seek – and commit to act in our daily life on what we have dreamed of.”  A champion for justice and education and for walking with the marginalized, Pope Francis invited Catholic colleges and universities to be part of a cultural and social process of transformation. May this be the time for us to reflect deeply, and to accompany each other while we continue in our quest of increasing the recognition of the University as an important contributor to the to the communities we serve, as an institution that provides access and opportunity to all, as a university that offers a values-based education, all while preserving our Jesuit mission, traditions, and core values. In his own words, “education is always an act of love and hope that, from the present, looks to the future for a renewed society”.

In these coming days, we will gather in prayer and reflection, and we will have an opportunity to remember and celebrate Pope Francis with affection, as we give thanks for the values he held close and shared so generously. May he rest in peace y que Dioses lo tenga en su santa gloria.

Jersey City, N.J. – April 15, 2025 – Saint Peter’s University is proud to announce it is modernizing Pope Hall to enhance its nursing and health science programs by providing students with state-of-the-art learning facilities. This ambitious project focuses on the renovation of Pope Hall, significantly enhancing the university’s capacity to prepare students for careers in critical healthcare fields.

Currently underway, the initial phase of the renovation reimagines 12,000 square feet of space in Pope Hall, nearly doubling the capacity for its nursing programs. Built in 1969, Pope Hall is a well-maintained, four-story concrete academic building that has long served as a cornerstone of Saint Peter’s campus. The modernization effort will preserve the building’s historical character while integrating cutting-edge resources for student learning and collaboration.

“This announcement marks an important first step in expanding Saint Peter’s footprint in health sciences education,” said Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s University. “We are committed to addressing the critical demand for skilled healthcare professionals by providing students with access to top-tier educational resources and facilities. This renovation ensures our students receive the hands-on training and interdisciplinary education needed to excel in today’s evolving healthcare landscape.”

Once completed, the transformed space will feature state-of-the-art nursing and exercise science rooms, three flexible learning spaces and modern seminar rooms. The design incorporates advanced interactive technology, including a virtual reality simulation lab, which will offer students the opportunity to wear headsets to step into a virtual exam bay with a patient. They will be able to practice professional patient interaction, assessment and care while also gaining clinical, in-person patient care training hours.

Additional renovations to the space include improved environmental systems and internal glass walls to create an open and engaging learning environment. A central student commons will further support collaboration and foster a sense of community among students and faculty.

The newly upgraded space is set to open for the spring semester of 2026. Saint Peter’s University is also in the developmental phases of establishing a social work and a physician’s assistant program.

At Saint Peter’s, gratitude and generosity are not just values; they are the foundation of the community’s caring spirit as a Jesuit, Catholic university. This commitment is evident in the support students receive, with 100 percent of undergraduates supported by scholarships and financial aid to pursue their education. Ensuring student success and providing opportunities for them to thrive is a shared commitment across the University.

In this spirit, the University will celebrate its annual Saint Peter Day on April 9. Established in 2019, Saint Peter Day is the largest fundraising day for the University community, held each April to commemorate the University’s founding on April 3, 1872. This year, the celebration is expanding with campus-wide events and activities designed to spark enthusiasm and strengthen the sense of community.

The day is not only about celebration, but also about fostering a deeper understanding of the power of philanthropy. The Office of Annual Giving is collaborating with students and the Student Government Association (SGA) to further engage them in supporting causes that  embody the mission of the University.

Students’ belief in the mission of the University and their desire to give back reflects a growing commitment to fostering a culture of philanthropy among future generations. By making a gift, students not only help the University thrive but also set a powerful example for other potential donors, demonstrating that every gift, no matter the size, can create a ripple effect that benefits the entire community.

A key initiative in this effort is the Class of 2025 Class Gift, a tradition that encourages graduating students to give back and leave a lasting impact. The Class of 2025 Class Gift project encourages the graduating class to support the General Scholarship Fund, which helps ensure that future Peacocks have the financial support they need to succeed and, thanks to student participation, has served to build momentum for Saint Peter Day.

Evony Jones ’25, president of the SGA, has taken an active role in leading these philanthropic initiatives. Her personal gratitude for the financial support she has received has fueled her passion for giving back.

“I was fortunate enough to receive support at Saint Peter’s, and it made a tremendous difference in my college experience,” Jones shared. “It allowed me to focus more on my academics and leadership roles without the burden of financial stress. I am proud to lead the campaign for  the Class of 2025 Class Gift, which is my way of ensuring that future students have the same opportunities.”

Echoing Jones’ sentiments, fellow SGA representative Araceli Amelco ’25 also emphasized how financial support shaped her time at Saint Peter’s.

“Scholarships have helped me tremendously with being able to attend classes full-time for my full four years here at Saint Peter’s, especially as a first-gen student,” said Araceli. “I was able to get the most out of my Saint Peter’s experience, such as being a part of different organizations on campus like SGA and Orientation Team, and being able to give back so future students can experience Saint Peter’s is truly fulfilling.”

With students making gifts of $20.25 in honor of their graduation year, the project demonstrates that all gifts, no matter the size, make a real difference. On Saint Peter Day, the Class of 2025 will be joining the wider Saint Peter’s donor community in giving back to support the needs of our students. Gifts made in support of Saint Peter Day will make an even bigger impact because they can be doubled through special matches and challenges throughout the day. Donors are encouraged to give to an area that means the most to them.

Saint Peter Day events and activities will be shared in the upcoming week and donors can learn more or make an early gift now. Whether through attending events, making a gift or sharing the spirit of giving on social media, every member of the Saint Peter’s community is invited to participate in this celebration of generosity and gratitude.
