Please allow up to 14 business days for the Center for Global Learning to review your STEM OPT request and issue the updated I-20 with the STEM OPT recommendation.

• USCIS typically processes STEM OPT applications within 3 months. You can track the status of your application on the USCIS website.
• You may continue working for up to 180 days beyond your OPT expiration date while the STEM application is pending, provided your application was submitted on time.

• You may submit your STEM OPT application to USCIS up to 90 days before your current OPT end date.
• USCIS must receive your application before your OPT expires—late submissions will be denied.

Attend a STEM OPT Workshop. These workshops are mandatory for any student wishing to apply for the STEM extension. Advanced registration is required.

Prepare Required Documents:

• Job offer letter from an E-Verify employer
• Completed Form I-983 (Training Plan) signed by you and your employer. Be sure to read the I-983 Instructions
• Copy of current I-20, passport, visa, and EAD card
• Two passport-style photos taken within the last 30 days (digital version for online upload)
• Official transcript or diploma showing STEM degree completion

Submit STEM OPT Request via International Student Portal:

• Log in to the International Student Portal
• Navigate to the Student Request Center
• Submit the STEM OPT Request Form
• Upload Form I-983 and all supporting documentation
• Once submitted, the $200 maintenance of status fee will be applied to your student account

Receive Updated I-20 with STEM OPT Recommendation:

• After processing, download your new I-20 from the portal
• Sign the I-20 and save it as a PDF—you’ll need it for your USCIS application

Submit Your STEM OPT Application Online via USCIS:

• Create or log into your account at uscis.gov
• Complete Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization)
• Upload your documents:
  • New I-20 with STEM OPT recommendation (must be signed)
  • Passport ID page, visa page, previous EAD card, I-94
  • Two passport-style photos
  • Proof of degree (transcript or diploma)
• Pay the $470 USCIS fee
• Submit your application before your current OPT end date

NOTE: Make sure all uploads are clear, legible PDFs or JPGs, and retain confirmation of submission for your records.

• You will receive an email from SEVP ([email protected]) on or shortly after your OPT start date.
• Follow the instructions to create your SEVP Portal account.
• Check your spam/junk folder.
• Use the SEVP Portal to update address and employer information.

• You are still required to submit official documentation like Form I-983 and evalsuations through the International Student Portal.

To maintain valid F-1 status while on STEM OPT, you must meet the following reporting obligations:
Mandatory Reports:

• Validation Report every 6 months
• Annual Self-evalsuations (Form I-983) at months 12 and 24
• Report any changes within 10 days:
  • Employer name or address
  • End of employment
  • Job title or role change
  • Residential address or contact information

All updates must be submitted via the International Student Portal:

• Log in and click on Student Request Center tab
• Select 'STEM Report Participation’
• Upload the appropriate documentation or verify the information
• Do not email updates—use the portal to ensure your SEVIS record is updated accurately.

1. Your Optional Practical Training (OPT) has been extended for six months upon the issuance of your STEM OPT Extension I-20.  The six-month extension ends immediately if your I-765 application is withdrawn, canceled, or denied.
2. Your current or future employer must be enrolled in E-Verify at all times. An I-983 Training Plan is required when adding, ending, or changing STEM OPT employers.
3. While you are on STEM OPT, you may not accrue more than 150 days of unemployment during the full OPT period of 36 months, comprised of both the initial 12 months and the 24-month extension. If you fail to report your job information or if you are unemployed for 150 days while on OPT, SEVP will end your F-1 OPT and terminate your SEVIS record.
4. STEM OPT employers must always pay for your services. Volunteer work is not eligible for the STEM OPT extension.
5. Engaging in full-time and/or matriculated study while you are on OPT is considered a violation of your F-1 status. You understand that you must be issued a new I-20 before you can begin studying in a new program, and this will terminate your OPT authorization.

6. Be sure to notify the CGL if:

• you do not receive a receipt number
• you notice any mistakes on your EAD
• you get a denial or request for evidence from USCIS (upload through International Student Portal)
• you do not have your EAD and it has been more than ninety days since your receipt date

• Do not apply before receiving your updated I-20.
• Ensure Form I-983 is complete and accurate.
• Submit your application before your current OPT ends.
• Keep your address and employer info updated.
• Submit all required reports on time to avoid SEVIS termination.
