Students and Faculty from Korea visit Saint Peter’s: February 9, 2023

On February 9, 2023, twenty students and three professors (including the Department Chair) from Youngsan University’s Department of Police Administration visited the Jersey City campus, and met with Dean Zhu and members of the criminal justice department. While on campus, the Youngsan students observed Dr. Hyounagh Park’s Criminal Corrections Systems class, and then participated in Dr. Park’s “Wednesday Free Lunch” with Saint Peter’s students. During their visit, the Youngsan students also took field trips to the New York Police Department, the Bergen County Jail, and the Bergen County Police Academy.

The students had a wonderful time getting to know each other, and became fast friends!

Hudson County SWAT Team Presentation and Demonstration of Team’s Activities

Criminal Justice Student Association (C.J.S.A.) invited the Hudson County SWAT team. Five Hudson County SWAT team members visited students and explained their roles, missions, and hiring process on 17th. NOV. in Mclintrye Conference Center. They also demonstrated how they enter dangerous places, what kinds of equipment they have, how to operate in hostage situations, school shootings, terrorist activities, and so on.

Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, Hosted Successful Fundraising Event for the L.I.N.D.A. Organization

The Saint Peter’s chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, hosted a successful fundraising event for L.I.N.D.A. organization. The event featured a variety of musicians, poets, comedians, and essayists, including some members of the Saint Peter’s community.

Kari Larsen, Chair of Criminal Justice, and Lisa O’Neill Sanders, Chair of Philosophy, presented slides about their ongoing research of the Emmett Till murder and trial, and Bob Dylan’s call to the collective conscience in his song “The Death of Emmett Till”.

L.I.N.DA. collects toiletries, cosmetics and home products for women adversely affected by the criminal justice system (wearelinda.org). Raymond R. Rainville Criminal Justice Speaker Series with Lieutenant Brian Lucas

On September 30, 2021, the Criminal Justice Department launched its annual Raymond R. Rainville Criminal Justice Speaker Series with Lieutenant Brian Lucas from the Confidential Investigations Unit of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Lt. Lucas spoke about investigating alleged incidents of police misconduct, including claims of police brutality and inappropriate social media posts. Lt. Lucas also explained that a college education is beneficial for law enforcement officers, because it helps them make good decisions while on the job.

Criminal Justice Professor Collaborates with NYIT to Host Donation Drive

Beth Adubato, Ph.D., associate professor of criminal justice and founder of the L.I.N.D.A. (Living in New Directions Accessories) organization, worked with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Brandstanders, a student-run public relations agency, to host a donation drive for the organization. The nonprofit helps women who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, have been incarcerated and who suffer from homelessness or mental illness by distributing new and gently used cosmetics, toiletries and other items. The donation drive raised $850 in product donations and helped spread awareness of the organization.

Two speakers who have deep Jersey City roots discussed “Preventing Juvenile Delinquency Through Sports, Supervision and Self-Esteem” at the 17th Annual Stephen D. Doyle Criminal Justice Symposium on Thursday, April 6. Jerry Walker, president and CEO of Team Walker, and Bob Hurley ’71, president and head basketball coach of Saint Anthony’s High School shared their philosophies on how athletics, such as basketball, help keep at-risk youth off the streets.

William Brawner, founder and director of Haven Youth Center, Gives Keynote Address at HIV/AIDS Awareness Program

The Criminal Justice Department hosted its annual HIV/AIDS Awareness program on Wednesday, presented in collaboration with the Hudson County HIV/AIDS Prevention Planning Council. The keynote speaker was William Brawner, star of the documentary 25 to Life. For 25 years, Brawner kept his HIV positive status a secret; the documentary is about his journey as he informs people from his past of his status and apologizes to them. The day included HIV and STD testing, the keynote presentation and a showing of 25 to Life.

Documentary Star to Speak on HIV/AIDS Awareness

William Brawner, star of the documentary 25 to Life, will serve as the guest speaker for the annual HIV/AIDS program being held on campus this Wednesday, February 15 in the McIntyre Conference Center at 10:00 a.m. Brawner will speak at 11:00 a.m. and his documentary will be shown at 1:00 p.m.

This event is being hosted by the criminal justice department and the Hudson County HIV/AIDS Prevention Planning Council. Community outreach agencies will be present and there will be HIV and STD testing from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
