While on campus, the Youngsan students observed Dr. Hyounagh Park’s Criminal Corrections Systems class, and then participated in Dr. Park’s “Wednesday Free Lunch” with Saint Peter’s students. During their visit, the Youngsan students also took field trips to the New York Police Department, the Bergen County Jail, and the Bergen County Police Academy.

The students had a wonderful time getting to know each other, and became fast friends!

They also demonstrated how they enter dangerous places, what kinds of equipment they have, how to operate in hostage situations, school shootings, terrorist activities, and so on.

Rainville Criminal Justice Speaker Series with Lieutenant Brian Lucas from the Confidential Investigations Unit of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Lt. Lucas spoke about investigating  alleged incidents of police misconduct, including claims of police brutality and inappropriate social media posts.  Lt. Lucas also explained that a college education is beneficial for law enforcement officers, because it helps them make good decisions while on the job.

Beth Adubato, Ph.D., associate professor of criminal justice and founder of the L.I.N.D.A. (Living in New Directions Accessories) organization, worked with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Brandstanders, a student-run public relations agency, to host a donation drive for the organization. The nonprofit helps women who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, have been incarcerated and who suffer from homelessness or mental illness by distributing new and gently used cosmetics, toiletries and other items. The donation drive raised $850 in product donations and helped spread awareness of the organization.

Jerry Walker, president and CEO of Team Walker, and Bob Hurley ’71, president and head basketball coach of Saint Anthony’s High School shared their philosophies on how athletics, such as basketball, help keep at-risk youth off the streets.

The keynote speaker was William Brawner, star of the documentary 25 to Life. For 25 years, Brawner kept his HIV positive status a secret; the documentary is about his journey as he informs people from his past of his status and apologizes to them. The day included HIV and STD testing, the keynote presentation and a showing of 25 to Life.

This event is being hosted by the criminal justice department and the Hudson County HIV/AIDS Prevention Planning Council. Community outreach agencies will be present and there will be HIV and STD testing from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
